AN EARLY 17TH CENTURY WALLOON BY JOHANNES WUNDES, 83cm hatchet tipped backsword blade heavily struck with the distinctive maker's mark of Wundes to either side, characteristic hilt composed smaller looping side guard with pierced and foliate embossed insert, larger heart-shaped guard with stippled insert, down turned quillon with large lobed terminal, broad thumb ring, waisted knuckle and side guard inserted into the flattened bun-shaped pommel, wire bound grip with Turk's heads. Circa 1610. A group of identical swords exist on display in the Doge's Palace in Venice.
